The museum is housed in a beautiful 19th-century manor house (Edifício Apalaçado).

• Background: The estate originally belonged to a wealthy local family (Dias, Andrade, and Sancho) who built their fortune during the region’s historic cork trade boom. According to local lore, the original builder started his career as a humble donkey driver (almocreve).

• Architecture: The building features a Late Romantic style with distinct urban and Neo-Arabic influences (such as horseshoe arches), reflecting the bourgeois wealth of the region during that era.

2. A Vibrant Cultural Hub

Unlike more static museums, the Museu do Traje (run in cooperation with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia) serves as a socio-cultural meeting point for the local community. It hosts rotating temporary art and history exhibitions, live concerts, workshops, and features a small café popular with visitors for its fair prices. Additionally, the museum has been recognized and awarded for its accessibility features, including tactile maps and Braille signage.
