About the artwork / The inspiration

The origin of the Blues is situated in the Mississippi Delta; it was developed as one of the richest cotton-growing areas in the nation. The region attracted many speculators who developed land along the riverfronts for cotton plantations; they became wealthy planters dependent on the labor of people they enslaved … A lot of slaves escaped this oppression by starting a career as a blues singer. The Chess record company in Chicago makes them free and independent.

Artistic Techniques & Materials

In this diptych, the colors  painted in sand structures are chosen because of the landscapes in the south parts of the United States. The label of the record company Chess in Chicago has a dancing couple in the center of the circle as a symbol of freedom and independence.
