About the artwork / The inspiration
Horse racing on the Piazza del Campo, the main city square in Siena, dates from 1232. Lasting about ninety seconds, the race consists of three turns. Ten contradas ( military organized parts of the city ) participate. The frontside depict the two condottieri struggling for the leading contrada.
Artistic Techniques & Materials
The triptych shows two periods in the history of confrontation and competition in the historical center of Siena. On the canvas parts and the backside, the original colors of this cultural tradition are used.
