About the artwork / The inspiration
The breathtaking ruins of the Temple of Poseidon ( God of the Sea) are perched on a cliff at Cape Sounion, 70 km southeast of central Athens. Built in the mid-5th century BC, the striking Doric monument overlooks the Aegean Sea. Today, 15 of its original 34 marble columns remain standing.
Artistic Techniques & Materials
The light on the columns and the perspective of the ruin in front of the daybreak over the Aegean Sea are painted in oil, using Ocre and Ultramarine. The range from light to dark is accentuated in the sand structure, which made it possible to create a rocky landscape. The static monument, in contrast to the birds, is the essence of the expression.
